In a recent interview, nationally-known driving instructor and race car driver Timothy Smith itemized the step-by-step plan needed to make teens safer, smarter drivers.

He encourages parents to use proactive strategies to instruct teenagers in a 'safety first' attitude and to work on specific particular car handling and mental driving skills. He developed simple and easy exercises that every parent can follow with their teenagers to systematically reduce risks, build skills and develop awareness, resulting in safer drivers.
Teenagers are by far the riskiest group of drivers, with crash rates many times that of older drivers. According to the Allstate Foundation, a survey conducted with 15 to 17 year old drivers revealed that:
- More than half (56 percent) of young drivers use cell phones while driving.
- 69 percent said that they speed to keep up with traffic
- 64 percent said they speed to go through a yellow light.
- 47 percent said that passengers sometimes distract them.
- Nearly half said they believed that most crashes involving teens result from drunk driving.
Smith is passionate about changing the driving habits of teenagers (and parents). He is devoted to helping parents work with their teenagers to develop and hone better driving skills and attitudes. He stresses the parent's role in being responsible educators to their teenagers, not only as role models but in helping them be better able to react to the hazards of the road and other drivers.
