At 100 years of age, Harry Carlson was not ready to give up the things that he loved the most; working out at the gym, long daily walks and target practice at the shooting range were three things that he enjoyed profusely. Unfortunately, lower back conditions and sciatic pain began to get in the way. Due to Harry's age, most spinal surgeries were not an option. Long invasive procedures with the use of general anesthesia proved to be too risky. Thanks to Laser Spine Institute and their advanced, minimally invasive spinal procedures, Harry was able to receive the surgery he needed without the use of general anesthesia. Two months after Harry's March 2008 procedure, he is back to living life to its fullest.

I only wish I was doing as well as my dad!

This spring, Mr. Harry Carlson underwent an outpatient, minimally invasive spine procedure at Laser Spine Institute and was able to have his spinal stenosis corrected quickly. Prior to his back pain, Harry worked out at the gym, went to the shooting range and took long walks. After his spinal stenosis diagnosis, his neurosurgeon was reluctant to perform evasive surgery and recommended pain management, and heavy medications, which only gave Harry temporary relief and his overall condition worsened.

Concerned for Mr. Carlson's health, his son, Alan, referred to the Laser Spine Institute website ( Medical Director Dr. Michael Perry reviewed Harry's MRI and determined he was a candidate for minimally invasive laser-assisted spine surgery to correct his spinal stenosis and disc degeneration. Within three weeks, LSI's compassionate team of professionals accommodated the Carlson family's needs by arranging medical clearance and a progressive surgery schedule. Harry with his son and daughter-in-law, Bev, flew from Anchorage, Alaska and Springfield, Oregon and arrived a few days before surgery. LSI surgeons performed a unique spine procedure under a local anesthetic with twilight sedation which reduced many risks for Harry Carlson.

Two months after surgery, Harry whom recently celebrated his 101st birthday, no longer needs strong pain killers and is doing better than ever attending physical therapy where he focuses mostly on balance and regaining his strength. He is already walking three miles a day and has returned to target practice at the shooting range which is impressive at 101 years of age. His son, Alan says "I only wish I was doing as well as my dad!"
