Visa developed the Payment Application Best Practices (PABP) specifications as part of the CISP/PCI compliance program, to assist software vendors in creating secure payment applications that help merchants and agents mitigate compromises, prevent storage of sensitive cardholder data (including full magnetic stripe contents, CVV2/CVC2 values, and PIN data) and support overall compliance with the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
The PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) has adopted Visa's PABP and has recently released the standard as the Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS). PCI SSC fully recognizes applications developed and certified to PABP version 1.4 specifications as being suitable for new deployments.
