Part 1: NERC Reliability Standards (Functional Entity descriptions and their alignment with standards, audit preparedness tools, industry "best practices".)
This session will provide an introductory level discussion regarding the details of NERC Reliability Standards and the associated NERC Readiness and Compliance audits.

The audience will be introduced to the individual NERC registered entities such as Transmission Owners, Transmission Providers, Generator Owners, Generator Operators, etc and how the individual NERC standards relate to each of these registered entities. We will also give you a break down of the reliability standards by functional entity and how the reliability standards ensure that each entity maintains accurate and complete records.

The key features of the most critical reliability standards will be discussed, along with which areas have been most difficult for entities to meet the measurable standards. You will also hear about the use of tools such as Reliability Audit Worksheets (RSAW) and internal compliance programs which have been shown to be of great value to many companies.

The session will end with a summary of best practices within the utility industry; what they are and how companies utilize them to prepare for their upcoming audits.

Part 2: Key Issues to Individuals (Organizational readiness, Available tools to assist staff, level of detail for record management, record retention periods, industry "best practices" for audit preparedness.)

This session will provide a discussion regarding the organizational impacts of the daunting task of preparing for NERC readiness and NERC Compliance audits.

We will be reviewing NERC registered entities such as Transmission Owners, Transmission Providers, Generator Owners, Generator Operators, etc and how the individual NERC standards related to each of these registered entities.

We will be identifying the key elements of the most critical reliability standards and how an organization can adequately prepare for meeting the measures associated with these standards. We will be discussing the level of detail that can be expected when the audit is performed. There will also be examples of the types of documentation that the auditors will be asking for, the record retention period for each type of documentation required for each standard and how other organizations have managed this huge amount of data retrieval and document coordination.

We will complete this session with a summary of different methodologies that are utilized by some of the industry leaders and what tools are available to assist their staff in preparing for the upcoming NERC audits.

Part 3: Emergency Operations Standards(Documented action plans, clear and concise instructions, updated contact information, contingency plan for alternate locations, practice of detailed plan.)

We will focus on one of the more critical areas of the NERC Reliability Standards; the Emergency Operations Standards (EOP 001, 003, 005, 006, 008 and 009). The Emergency Operations related standards cover the areas of; Emergency Operations Planning, Load Shedding Plans, System Restoration Plans and regional reliability coordination, Loss of Control Center functionality and Black Start testing and documentation. We will discuss the key elements of each of these related areas; the specific items within each standard and how the standards are designed to ensure adequate preparedness for potential emergency situations before they arise. We will discuss the development of clear and concise instructions and detailed plans. The importance of a thoroughly thought out and detailed emergency plan which has been practiced with all involved participants is vital to the safe and reliable recovery from an emergency event. The EOP related standards will measure an organizations readiness for just such an occurrence. We will summarize the key components of a well developed emergency plan and walk through the vital pieces of systems, communication, cross departmental coordination and alternative operating plans.
