This Tuesday evening, Matthew Sanford, critically acclaimed author of the book WAKING: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence, is coming to Ridgewood to give a lecture and teach a yoga class for people of all abilities. The event entitled "Healing the Mind Body Relationship" will be held at the Ridge School (325 West Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450) from 6 pm to 8:30 pm and will include a short talk by Sanford who will then teach a yoga class for people of ALL abilities.

Visionary, philosopher, yoga teacher, speaker, author and leading voice in the integrative health movement - and recent winner of the Volvo for Life Award - Matthew Sanford will talk about his life and how he survived a devastating car accident that took the lives of his father and sister and left him paralyzed from the chest down... and how for the last twenty-eight years, he has been on a practical exploration of the mind-body relationship through his practice and teaching of yoga.

Anyone who is living in a wheelchair from paralysis, amputation, stroke, MS, Parkinsons, or other conditions that make life challenging, will be deeply touched by Sanford's work. He teaches not to what is DISabled ... but rather, to all that is ABLED, showing how everyone can practice yoga in ways that are truly life-changing. His extraordinary teaching and presence is inspiring for all. Sanford states. "Not living vibrantly through my whole body [took] a heavy toll." He began to realize that being disconnected from one's body was not just his problem; it was a problem that many people shared. "Yoga can occur through any body. It occurs at the intersection of your mind's intent and your body's limitations," says Sanford. "When you think of yoga, sitting in a wheelchair doesn't come to mind. But whether you sit all day in a wheelchair or behind a desk, the mind-numbing effect is similar."

Even though devoted student, Yoga Therapist, Caren Patterson, RYT, CCYT, IAYT (one of Naturally Yoga's teachers) pulled this event together on very short notice, the response has been tremendous.

Although there is no fee for this experience, participants are being requested to make at least a $25 donation to Sanford's charitable foundation, Mind Body Solutions (see below). Sanford's book WAKING will be available for sale and he will sign copies.
