TEFL International Introduces Online Learning Options and Specialized Certificates for English Teacher Trainees

Summary: TEFL International, is to offer online TEFL certificate and diplomas to compliment their classroom based courses in more than 20 locations worldwide.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 12, 2008 -- Not everyone who wants a career in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) is able to attend full-time onsite training, and some prefer a more focused instructional approach than is offered by traditional TEFL courses. To accommodate those individuals, TEFL International, one of the world's largest distributed course providers, will offer online and "combined" certificate courses as well as specialized and diploma courses, starting July 1, 2008.

"We received many requests for these types of courses from students that don't have the time or finances to take an intensive course abroad," said Alex Strachan, the director of TEFL International. "We also heard from students that want to use an online course as a 'taster' so that they can see if our instruction style is right for them before they commit to a course overseas."

The new distance learning courses can be taken with or without online tutor support and will provide participants with internationally-recognized certification. Since these online courses cannot provide actual teaching practice, trainees will receive a CD-ROM with footage of experienced teachers conducting foreign language lessons.

The online courses will also include the specialized courses, a Certificate in Teaching Business English (CTBE) and a Certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners (CTEYL), plus a diploma course. Both the CTBE and CTEYL courses provide tutor support and can be completed in combination with the basic online TEFL certification course or any of the other courses offered.

The diploma course is an advanced qualification course. To qualify, applicants must have completed one of the basic certificate courses or their equivalent, currently be or have been a practicing teacher, and finally, be able to complete the course within one year. Course takers can opt for tutor support but a self-paced solo version is also available.

For even greater flexibility, TEFL International is also offering a TEFL certification course that consists of both distance learning and in-class practice. Course-takers first study teaching theories with their tutors via the course's online component. Then they receive teaching practice at one of TEFL International's TEFL course training locations.

"The combined course is ideal for those that do not perform to their full potential in intensive onsite study programs, or have time constraints," said Strachan. "Participants can work at their own pace during the distance learning component, and they spend only two weeks onsite."
