Motorists 18 and over may use a 'hands-free device'.
Fullerton, CA (PRWEB) June 16, 2008
WirelessEmporium.com, a leading online retailer for cell phone accessories, has announced a special sale in the run-up to the new Cellular Phone Laws which are aimed at reducing cell phone related accidents.
Wireless Emporium intends to provide great deals on Bluetooth headsets especially to California drivers. The online retailer announces a special sale in keeping with its mission statement, "to provide consumers and on-the-go professionals a one-stop shop for cellular phone and wireless device accessories … at THE LOWEST PRICES online". The cellular accessory provider also guarantees free USPS First Class Mail shipping, with orders in California shipped typically within 1-2 business days.
The laws, which come into effect on July 1, ban the use of handheld cell phones while driving. However, they allow motorists to use hands-free devices, like Bluetooth headsets, with their cell phones while driving. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the laws will reduce distractions to the drivers and ensure that the vehicle is safely operated.

About the Cell Phone Laws:
The two laws (Vehicle Code, sections 23123 - 4) will take effect from July 1, 2008. They take effect immediately with no grace period. The DMV explains the first law "... prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle." and the second states, "Motorists 18 and over may use a 'hands-free device'."
While a violation point will not be added for violation of the cellular phone law, the conviction will appear on the driving record. The base fine starts at $20 for a first offense. Subsequent offenses will see a base fine of $50, with additional penalty assessments that may triple the base amount.
The new laws do not prohibit dialing while using a hands-free, but text messaging is discouraged. An officer is allowed to pull a driver over and issue a citation for text messaging while driving. The only exceptions to the laws are in the case of emergencies. A driver is allowed to use a cell phone without a hands-free device to make emergency calls to a law enforcement agency, a medical provider, the fire department, or other emergency services agency.
