Known online as the 'Wolf Lord,' Patrick Shyu has created a popular dating site that has already helped 20 couples get married. The newest version of the free dating site and online hangout HumanPets.com launches today.

Human Pets, a popular dating website in the emerging social gaming trend, presents a virtual world based on the concept of having humans as pets. In the virtual world, all users are animals who can be fed, groomed, nicknamed, and even bought as pets. Players earn virtual currency by interacting with each other in games, forums, chat rooms, and auctions where postcards from around the world are often exchanged.

In a recent call for success stories, 20 couples shared how the year-old site helped them get engaged or married. "A friend invited me to join Human Pets. Almost immediately I had an owner and it was a beautiful girl," writes one user, who eventually married her. Hundreds more responded about having found new friendships and relationships. In addition to dating, people use the site to find penpals, meet activity partners, and learn about new cultures. "Human Pets is all about meeting new people online in a fun way," said Patrick Shyu, the 25-year old founder.

Today, HumanPets.com launches its newest version, marking the first time that the fascinating site will be made widely available to the public. The site will further explore the bond between pet and owner, as it offers a faster interface and more immersive world. In the beta release last week, 15,000 people have already signed up.

Users love the site, spending over 30 minutes on it per day on average. To add to the fun, users can choose animal avatars to represent themselves and have nicknames determined by their virtual owners. Site-creator Shyu happens to be a wolf nicknamed the 'Wolf Lord.'

Human Pets is part of a new trend of websites known as social gaming, spurred by the recent popularity of sites like Facebook and MySpace. Unlike traditional dating sites, Human Pets is more akin to a game and targeted towards teens and young adults. Users not only meet online but continue to bond as they interact with each other on the site in fun ways.
