New Documentary Explores Growing Civil Unrest Over Mexico's Political System

Choices is pleased to announce the release of a new documentary offering insight into Mexico's ongoing political struggle and its potential impact on the United States.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 20, 2008 -- As the debate over immigration continues in America, Choices is pleased to announce the release of a new documentary offering insight into Mexico's ongoing political struggle and its potential impact on the United States.

In her new film, The Other Mexico, director Francesca Nava explores the growing popularity of the Zapatista movement and the rise of its inspiring yet mysterious leader known as "Subcomandante Marcos". The film chronicles his rise to power among Mexico's poor and indigenous people and his efforts to have their voice heard during the controversial 2006 Presidential election.

The Other Mexico is a powerful and thought provoking film about growing political and socioeconomic crisis in Latin America and we are pleased to be bringing this film to a wider audience
Despite living in a country with vast natural resources, 53% of Mexicans live in poverty. Confined to a political and economic system that supports only the top tier of society, many of the poor flee to the United States in search of work and new opportunities. Those that remain have little influence in their country's democracy.

Created to protest the NAFTA agreement between the U.S. and Mexico, the Zapatista movement, led by Marcos, started the "Other Campaign". This trek through each of Mexico's thirty-two states before the 2006 Presidential election sought attention for that country's "hidden majority". Through interviews with journalists, leading scholars and former Zapatista members, the film chronicles the campaign and debates Marcos's ultimate goal for himself and his movement.

With gripping footage of the government's crackdown on striking teachers in Oaxaca weeks before the election along with a step by step analysis of the unpopular and contested victory by the new president Felipe Calderon, The Other Mexico explores the growing political and socioeconomic crisis that threatens not only Latin America but beyond.

"The Other Mexico is a powerful and thought provoking film about growing political and socioeconomic crisis in Latin America and we are pleased to be bringing this film to a wider audience," commented Gina Draklich, Sr. VP at Choices. "We continually strive to release films that expand our knowledge and improve our understanding of our world."

The Other Mexico will be available on DVD July 1st, 2008.

The DVD's Special Features will include a photo gallery and lesson plan/guidebook for educators. SRP is $99.95. To order, visit www.choicesvideo.net or call 1-888-570-5400.
