Initially created as a youth hostel directory in 1999, relaunched today with 38 European city guides written by site editors, Editor's Picks and in-house hostel reviews, hostel photos, user reviews and travel forums.'s key feature is its customized search capability, which provides the functionality found on travel search sites but has been overlooked within the hostel category. The search engine helps travelers by providing extensive filtering and sorting; Google Maps pre-sorted by price level (over or under $50 / night); and a proprietary algorithm displays the highest value hostels first. This algorithm factors in price, location, rating, accommodation type, and whether it is / isn't an Editor's Pick.

We believe that the new EuropeanHostels makes it easier than ever to find the perfect hostel, budget hotel, or B&B for your trip.

It's been more than a century since Richard Schirrmann opened the first youth hostel in Altena, Germany, and the demand for youth hostels in Europe has never let up.
