Viral Campaign For Barack Obama Accepted Into Collection of Smithsonian Institution

Part of a viral campaign for Barack Obama was inducted into the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History collection. The work is an example of how modern advertising techniques, such as viral and interactive efforts, are being utilized for big-impact endeavors.

A team of non-traditional advertisers were honored on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Smithsonian Institution by having part of their viral advertising campaign for Barack Obama accepted into the Institution's collection at the National Museum of American History.

The campaign centered around a word-of-mouth effort asking people to mention one positive thing about Obama each time they were asked for the time. To bolster the effort, the team created five Obama for President wristwatches that are being sold online at Three of the five watches were accepted into the Smithsonian collection.

"I've worked on traditional viral campaigns like McDonald's first Happy Meal and Cabbage Patch Kids dolls and I've seen these products years later at garage sales," said team founder Jack Goldenberg, "but seeing the Obama for President watches displayed one day at the Smithsonian will be quite an honor."

Goldenberg presented the watches to Obama last Friday at an event in Philadelphia. The Obama campaign had heard about the effort and contacted Goldenberg to ask if they could have one of the watches.

Of the three watches that have been accepted into the Smithsonian, two carry photos of Obama, and one displays a picture of the Earth with the slogan, "Love your Mama. Vote for Obama." Although sold as collectibles, people can participate in the viral campaign without purchasing a watch.
