Local Motorcyclists Lead National Ride to Work Day Events

Area motorcycle and scooter riders rev up to lead the 17th Annual Ride to Work Day in Tulsa. Special events and a rider's breakfast are planned. Mayor's endorsement and high gas prices could make 2008 the largest Ride to Work Day ever.

Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) June 26, 2008 -- Tulsa mayor, Kathy Taylor, today officially proclaimed July 16, 2008 as Ride to Work Day and encouraged Tulsans to commute by motorcycle or scooter. Two Wheel Oklahoma is sponsoring a rider's breakfast from 6:00 am to 10:00 am that morning at the Savoy Restaurant, 6033 S. Sheridan Road. Two-wheeling commuters are invited to join the mayor and kick off Ride to Work Day in Tulsa.

Since 1992 Ride to Work Day has grown to include hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists worldwide who believe that riding to work en masse will demonstrate the positive social, environmental and economic impact of motorcycles and scooters. The nationwide Ride to Work Day takes place this year on Wednesday, July 16th, 2008. Riding to work demonstrates that motorcycles and scooters are a safe alternative to commuting by automobile. Motorcycles get great gas mileage, help conserve resources, reduce wear on streets and ease traffic and parking congestion.

With soaring gas prices more and more Americans are seeking economical transportation alternatives. Each day in the US about 1.1% of commuters commute by motorcycle instead of automobile. Each year that number swells on Ride to Work Day, and approximately 60,000 fewer gallons of gasoline are burned.

Last year Tulsa was the first city in Oklahoma to endorse Ride to Work Day. The event is promoted by many motorcycling groups nationwide and is led by Ride To Work, a non-profit advocacy effort. Two Wheel Oklahoma is a video project documenting motorcycle destinations and scenic highways in and around Oklahoma, and working to advocate motorcycling in Oklahoma.
