"We've never had ads," said Jon Davidson, CEO. "But we've always had lots of offers, especially over the past year. Finally we all sat down and talked about it and we couldn't see advertisements playing a role in what we're trying to accomplish. Basically, we're control freaks. We don't want material on our site, even those little search-engine related ads, if we can't say yes or no to what's being put up. It doesn't work for us."

"If we'd had some ad for a telemedicine clinic sitting there on the site," said Davidson, "I'm afraid we wouldn't have felt as free to say, look, this works under these circumstances but not necessarily when you factor in this, this, and that. Bias creeps in through little cracks. Frankly, we see advertisements as a big crack."

"Could we make extra money putting advertising on the site? Absolutely," said Davidson. "But for us the trade-off in compromising what has always been an honest relationship with our readers just isn't worth it. No ad is worth sacrificing a reputation we've worked hard to build. This decision may not be standard operating procedure online, but we've never been a company to go along with the crowd just to get along."
