Indian Telecommunications Giant Taps Greenplum, Sun and Solaris™ OS for Faster Access to Call Detail Data

Greenplum, a leading provider of database software for business intelligence, and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced that Reliance Communications is using Greenplum Database, running on the Sun Data Warehouse Appliance, to power a range of applications, from legal and regulatory compliance to call detail record analysis.

Greenplum Database is the world's fastest, most cost-effective solution for analyzing the massive amounts of information generated by surging worldwide usage of wireless and broadband services. The Data Warehouse Appliance powered by Sun and Greenplum is the industry's first cost-effective, high-performance super-capacity data warehouse appliance. Purpose-built for high-performance, large-scale data warehousing, the solution integrates best-in-class database, server, and storage components into one easy-to-use, plug-and-play system.

"The Sun Data Warehouse Appliance running Greenplum Database is helping Reliance meet its goal of superior responsiveness in a challenging data environment -- one that is characterized by rapid growth and increasing user demand," said Raj Joshi, VP and Head (Decision Support Systems) at Reliance Communications Limited. "Deploying the joint Greenplum and Sun solution improved our response times and enabled Reliance Communications to improve our data management."

Reliance Communications Limited is the telecommunications company of Reliance ADA Group which is one of India's largest industrial groups. Reliance Communications is known for its innovative market offerings and practices. As Reliance has grown to more than 40 million subscribers, providing accurate and timely data support and analytics to all parts of the business has been a challenge. Turning an ad hoc request from historical records could take multiple hours; even loading a day's worth of data into the system could take up to three hours.

After deploying the Sun Data Warehouse appliance running Greenplum Database, the time required to turn around an ad hoc request for detailed call records from the historical call detail record (CDR) database shrank by over 80 percent in most cases, from five hours to less than an hour, and the system reduced the average time to load a day's worth of data by over 80 percent, from two hours to under twenty minutes. Following the success of the initial deployment, Reliance is expanding the system to maintain and support ad hoc requests for billing data among coexistent telco carriers on the broader network by including call detail records from its interconnect traffic.

"As demand for wireless and internet connectivity soars in Asia, emerging companies as well as larger established players are looking for ways to manage the explosion of call detail data. There is now an urgent need for high-performance, cost-effective database solutions to deal with huge volumes of data," said Bill Cook, chief executive officer of Greenplum. "Greenplum Database offers superior performance and scalability with a significantly lower cost than traditional solutions, which makes us particularly appealing to fast-growth companies who are using data to gain competitive advantage."

"Reliance's choice of the Sun Data Warehouse Appliance gives the company a distinct advantage in the highly competitive and fast-growing Indian telecom market by enabling high-speed, well-informed business decisions," said Kapil Sood, Director, Industry Sales Organisation, Sun Microsystems. "In addition to the high performance compute power of the Data Warehouse Appliance, Reliance will also benefit from the Solaris™ 10 Operating System and Solaris™ ZFS file system with its dramatic advances in file management and data integrity. Altogether the Sun and Greenplum solution gives Reliance a new level of business intelligence."
