Rob Snell, author of Starting a Yahoo! Business For Dummies (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; $24.99; 410 pages; ISBN: 978-0-7645-8873-0) and Co-owner GunDogSupply.com went before House Committee on Small Business to speak about the impact of online advertising on small firms last week.

At the address Snell spoke about how online stores, like the Yahoo! Small Business, have enabled small businesses compete with larger retailers.

"Today, I'm going to share real numbers with you, so you can see the impact of search marketing on a real small business in dollars and cents. Every year our Yahoo! Stores get millions of visitors from the search engines. Tens of thousands of those visitors convert into paying customers. This year we will sell over $10 million dollars though several different Yahoo! Stores," said Snell.

"The Internet levels the playing field for small business folks like us. As a consultant and speaker, my job is to teach the little guys how to compete with the big guys. We use the Internet to leverage the strengths of small business: unparalleled product knowledge, enthusiasm for what we sell and do, and outstanding customer service and support. Bigger retailers cannot compete when we go head to head, product to product. They sell too many things!"

Snell is a frequent speaker and consultant and shares a lot of his expertise in Starting a Yahoo! Business For Dummies. The book helps both first-time Web entrepreneurs and existing brick-and-mortar businesses set up an online shop using Yahoo's merchant tools and platform. Coverage includes getting a URL, establishing Web space, building store design, setting up transaction tools, and handling orders. The book also covers Yahoo's tools designed to promote a store and the ins-and-outs of running an online business to help get things off the ground.
