Anyone who has used the Internet for any length of time has likely come across a captcha. It is simply a test, usually one of those colorful or patterned boxes that contain distorted or decorative numbers and letters. A human looking at a captcha can read the contents and type them in as a response. A computer program cannot recognize the figures, or at least this was the case until not long ago.
Earlier this year, rumors traveled around the globe stating that sneaky spammers have managed to crack the protective captcha of several popular email services, allowing bots to automatically signup for a large number of new accounts without requiring human action, meaning that more spam was to be sent from domains that are unlikely to be blacklisted, and landing to our inboxes.
Fortunately, these claims did not prove to be true, but security experts warn that the time when computer programs will be able to decipher captchas is not far, and the automated submissions will be a real threat to any web form, of small or big sites equally.
"Captcha can be defeated by spammers when not well implemented, resulting in massive amounts of automated submissions," says Alexandru Marias, a security expert from Captcha Creator.
Captcha Creator is a company that provides captcha services for website operators who wish to avoid the effects of malicious and mass spamming campaigns. Many spammers use specialized programs, or bots, to crawl the web for websites where they can send their annoying messages. These bots send junk data through automated submissions of registration, blog and forum entries, and so on. In doing so, they spam webmasters and website visitors alike.
"Captchas gives website owners peace of mind that email and other guest website activity they receive will come from actual human beings. When bots come to a captcha, they are stopped cold because they cannot decipher the pictured numbers and letters," Alexandru Marias explains about captcha use.
"One of the most important security features of a captcha is that it changes each time the form screen is brought up. This keeps bots from retrying different solutions on a single captcha. Captcha Creator has a multitude of backgrounds, fonts, and ways to configure the captchas so that they will be unbreakable," Marias comments about features of captchas.
