Eric Donaldson, President of Hot Shot Delivery, Houston's leading provider of same day courier services and warehousing solutions, recently appeared in a special report shown during CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight program. The War on the Middle Class report took an in depth look at the effect of rising fuel costs on small businesses, and specifically on the same day package delivery industry.

Hot Shot Delivery, founded in 1978, has had a long standing tradition of offering their courier customers competitive pricing along with the highest levels of customer service. However, with rising gas prices, it has become more difficult to find delivery drivers who are willing to endure the high prices at the pump. This is a common problem among delivery business owners and the Lou Dobbs Tonight program on CNN wanted to learn more about these effects and how delivery services are managing this problem.

Covering both the delivery and the education sectors, CNN's reporter Carrie Lee was able to convey the impact that gas prices have had on the middle class. Local colleges have compacted class schedules to ease the burden on commuter students that are no longer able to afford to drive to class each day. To ease costs for their owner-operator drivers, the majority of same day delivery companies are passing along fuel surcharges to their customers so their drivers can still earn a living doing package delivery. This surcharge is above the price of the normal delivery and is adjusted as the price of a gallon of gas is increased or decreased.

"The rising cost of gas has affected our margins as a business because we are not able, nor willing, to charge our customers proportionately to the quickly and consistently rising price of fuel," says Eric Donaldson, Hot Shot Delivery President. "Therefore, our margin on each delivery continues to decrease. However, we are working with technology providers and customers to streamline processes, routes, and schedules to keep our prices competitive."
