"Don Schlitz is a peerless songwriter, and his appearance at Veranda is an absolute privilege," said Tom Robey, Veranda's executive chef. "Our customers can delight in the unrivaled combination of timeless music and superlative cuisine. After enjoying a meal that utilizes fresh, local ingredients, they can revel in classics like 'The Gambler' or 'Forever and Ever, Amen.' This pair is destined to please, and all food and music lovers are invited to this extraordinary event at Veranda."
Schlitz, the writer of numerous chart-topping hits, was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. His career took off in 1978 when Kenny Rogers recorded his song "The Gambler." It was a smashing hit and became one of Rogers' signature songs. Later, it earned Schlitz a Grammy along with the Country Music Association's and the Academy of Country Music's "Song of the Year" honors.
Another distinguished song written by Schlitz, "On the Other Hand" performed by Randy Travis, received three "Song of the Year" honors from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
"Forever and Ever Amen" also struck a huge chord with Randy Travis fans. Co-written with Paul Overstreet, this hit earned a Grammy for "Country Song of the Year" and the Country Music Association's "Song of the Year" award. That same year, Schlitz wrote or co-wrote five number one singles.
In addition to Rogers and Travis, Schlitz's songs have played major roles in the careers of famed artists like Tanya Tucker, Alison Krauss, John Conlee, Alabama, Keith Whitley, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Judds, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and many others. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Association's Hall of Fame in 1993.
Schlitz continues writing songs, including the theme for President George Bush's
"Points of Light" campaign in the early 90s. He also produced a Broadway musical rendition of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," which he co-wrote with Ken Ludwig, a Tony-Award winning playwright.
"As one of the greatest songwriters of our time, Don's has a celebrated career intertwined with numerous recognitions and awards," Robey said. "The opportunity to enjoy a high-caliber artist in the intimate environment at Veranda will be a pleasure for everyone who attends."
Other upcoming artists in the "Veranda Summer Singer and Songwriter Series" include No. 1 songwriters Melanie Safka (August 19) and Richard Leigh (September 2).
