SNAP Partners with NFPA to Bring The Uh-Ohs™To Life: A Breakthrough in Teaching Kids About Safety

Under the banner of "Cute. Curious. Careless," the Uh-Ohs are block-shaped characters that constantly get themselves into trouble by ignoring good safety practices.

Under the banner of "Cute. Curious. Careless," the Uh-Ohs are block-shaped characters that constantly get themselves into trouble by ignoring good safety practices.

"Traditionally, safety has been taught by telling kids 'don't do this' and 'don't do that,'" says Scott Nash, Chairman of SNAP. "With The Uh-Ohs, we use a radically different approach. We use these cartoon characters to show the consequences of accidents and demonstrate how they can be prevented."

A short introductory animation of The Uh-Ohs is online at the NFPA website (http://www.nfpa4kids.org or http://www.theuhohs.org ). But the world of The Uh-Ohs extends far beyond watching. The Uh-Ohs is about doing.

"Today's kids are less interested in watching animation," says Nash. "Interactivity has become a necessary ingredient in kids media." Kids go online to play with the Uh-Ohs in a series of challenging yet educational games. Each game teaches children important lessons about fire safety, accident prevention and safe recreational habits.

Going beyond the online world, The Uh-Ohs is also a collection of 30 brightly-colored toy figures. The toys are marked with a secret code that allows kids to access the online games. "The toys complete the experience," says Scott. "They make a tangible connection to the website and the online gaming and help to reinforce the message. The safety lessons continue from the online world into the real world."

The purchase of the toys funds the games, taking the financial burden of safety education out of the non-profit sector and away from government grants, letting the marketplace support the program. The toys can be purchased in bulk by fire and safety programs and by civic youth groups and given away to children to get them started on the crucial lessons of the Uh-Ohs.

The Uh-Ohs program is already in full swing. This year the NFPA is distributing 250,000 Uh-Ohs toys, 120,000 Uh-Ohs activity books, 480,000 Sparky the Fire Dog books featuring the Uh-Ohs, and 150,000 coloring books. In addition, 2.8 million fire prevention brochures are going to schools where kids will learn about the Uh-Ohs.
