Australia's Best Magazine interviews David Chuter from Futuris Automotive about supply chain management. This is a copy of the actual editorial that went to print.
As one of Ford's largest suppliers, Futuris Automotive have played a significant part in the development and launch of the exciting new Ford FG Falcon. Australia's best talks to David Chuter, Chief Marketing Officer for Futuris about what it takes to be a top supplier - and manufacturer.
Futuris Automotive is an innovative Australian company specialising in the design, engineering and manufacturing of automotive interior systems. It brings a fresh approach to creating flexible business solutions and delivering quality, value and innovation. Futuris creates 'the beauty within' for several of the world's leading automotive brands.
Futuris believes in creating sustainable, committed and long term partnerships to deliver win-win opportunities for all involved. It continues to develop such partnerships around the globe, such as business partnerships with Chery Automobile and Pangeo in China, Feltex in South Africa and Plexicor in Australia, with several others in development.
Since 2002, Futuris has been heavily involved in the design, development and manufacturing of complex interior system products for Ford, such as front and rear seats, floor pedal module and the steering system assembly. In addition to this, Futuris also supplies the window regulator mechanisms for the Ford Territory SUV. Through a joint venture with MCK Pacific - the parent company of Plexicor - further products for the FG Falcon include the floor carpet, trunk trim, headliner, parcel tray and various acoustic insulator mouldings.
Ford in Australia is one of Futuris' strongest partnerships. The company's manufacturing facility is actually inside the Ford vehicle assembly complex at Campbellfield, Victoria.
"We insist on being as close to our customers as we physically can be - and so we develop real partnerships and work as a team," says Chuter. "This is so important to enable us to continually raise the bar in terms of levels of quality and delivery performance. Equally important to us are our key suppliers - without them we would not be able to provide the right product at the right cost and the right quality, especially as we deliver most of our products on a fully sequenced basis."
"We source product from suppliers both within Australia and internationally," Chuter continues. "Having competitive suppliers who we can build productive, innovative and long term relationships with is critical to our business and to ensuring effective supply chains. Many of the suppliers are also involved with us throughout the design and validation phases of the program, so we have been working together for a number of years to make sure that new models such as the FG Falcon are a success."
The products that Futuris provides as a tier one supplier are complex, highly engineered and in many cases are safety related. These products are designed, engineered and tested at Futuris' head office and technical centre in Port Melbourne, Victoria, where Futuris employs over 200 engineers and technicians. Working in close partnership with the design and engineering team at Ford, the products supplied for the new FG Falcon have been improved in terms of performance, function, and overall competitiveness.
"For us, it's about being flexible and agile so that we can best support our customer's needs. It's also about ensuring that the products we supply genuinely enhance comfort, safety and convenience for the consumer," adds Chuter. "This is where we believe we can be a genuine business partner for customers like Ford and where we can do our bit to help ensure the success of vehicles such as the FG Falcon."
Drivers may not know Futuris by name, but manufacturers, suppliers and the automotive industry do. Futuris products are renowned amongst the best in the world.
