Best Value is the key in new cars.

New car buyers are shunning expensive purchases and shopping for value, according to UK car website motoring.co.uk.

Searches for economical cars are at a high, with the most popular individual car being the VW Polo Bluemotion, a 74 miles per gallon supermini with ultra low emissions.

Environmental concerns leave 4 x 4 searches at only 4 percent of the total, which would have been in double figures only a year ago. Consumers are simply avoiding the gas-guzzlers and pulling in their belts.

Another popular way to buy is with interest-free finance. Many car manufacturers are using this as a way of drawing in consumers to their websites. Users on motoring.co.uk can search all the manufacturer 0% finance deals in one quick search, and it proving hugely popular, with nearly 20% of users looking for this method of payment.

Users searching by price are shunning the most expensive cars, with cars under £15000 proving popular with 60 percent of users.

Motoring.co.uk spokesperson Chris Ashton Green explains. "Consumers cannot afford to be careless in their choice of car in the current climate. Most people looking for a new vehicle will want to make sure they choose an economical, cheap to run car that is environmentally sound. Value comes in a lot of different ways, from finance deals to miles per gallon and low road tax. Our new car search allows consumers to find the value they are looking for, and compare prices and offers from all the manufacturers in one place. We have built the most inclusive new car search in the UK."
