CH2M HILL - KZF Design Wins National Design Award from U.S. Air Force

CH2M HILL and KZF Design were awarded a U.S. Air Force national design award for concept design of the United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) consolidation facility at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. CH2M HILL partnered with KZF Design on the winning project.

CH2M HILL and KZF Design announced today that they received a U.S. Air Force national design award for concept design of the United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) consolidation facility at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

The companies were presented the 2008 USAF Merit Award for Concept Design at the 33rd annual U.S. Air Force Design Awards Ceremony held in Washington, DC. Regarded as much more than an awards competition, the winning projects establish the benchmark of design excellence that the Air Force expects for all its facilities and installations.

The $74 million USTRANSCOM project at Scott Air Force Base includes 220,000 square feet of new construction and addition/alteration of facilities to consolidate command operations from across the United States.

Scott Air Force Base is located in Illinois, near the St. Louis metropolitan area in St. Clair County, Ill. The base serves as the headquarters for Air Mobility Command, USTRANSCOM, Eighteenth Air Force and the Air Force Communications Agency.

The construction of the USTRANSCOM Consolidation facility at Scott Air Force Base was required as a result of the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Commission. The project consolidates USTRANSCOM, U.S. Army Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and U.S. Navy with existing Air Force and USTRANSCOM mission elements already at the base. The facility is strategically located in the downtown district of the base and helps to develop a corporate pedestrian campus for the area while providing a connector between the two major USTRANSCOM facilities. The facility's open plan maximizes flexibility to accommodate frequent mission changes; the design also maintains highly secure operational requirements.

In awarding CH2M HILL and KZF Design the 2008 USAF Design Award Merit Level, the judges included these notations:

  •      Appears innovative yet highly compatible with Scott Air Force Base
  •     Very unique design solution
  •     Well-organized floor plans
  •     Creative use of sloping and flat roofs to reduce building mass while adding interest.
  •     Good integration of multiple components into a cohesive facility.
