Mission Critical: How finance executives can take control of their IT investments.

CFO Conferences has announced that executives from The Boeing Co., EMC Corp., and Gartner Inc. have joined the speaker lineup at The CFO Technology Summit, scheduled for September 7-9, 2008, in San Francisco.

Randall Durling, director of International Finance and Treasury Operations at Boeing, will describe the innovative "hub and spoke" system for foreign-exchange technology he helped spearhead at the aviation giant. The highly automated, controllable, and auditable new infrastructure replaced multiple legacy systems, and has allowed an enormous increase in transaction processing with more reliability and less risk.

Jeffrey Bardin, director of Risk Management at EMC, will outline how to implement an integrated data risk and security strategy. His credentials make him extremely well positioned to do so. In addition to his work with corporations, Bardin has held Top Secret clearances while breaking codes and ciphers and performing Arabic language translations serving in the USAF and at the NSA.

Jackie Fenn, a vice president and Gartner Fellow in Gartner Research, will offer lessons from her new book, Mastering the Hype Cycle: How to Choose the Right Innovation at the Right Time, co-written with Mark Raskino. In it, Fenn describes an often repeated pattern: Some innovation (a new product, a management trend) captures the public's imagination and promises to transform companies that adopt it -- and inflict great pain on those that don't. Then, when the innovation fails to deliver, investments are wasted, stock prices plunge, and disillusionment sets in. But by understanding the hype cycle, Fenn explains, businesses can ride it more skillfully, timing investment decisions so that the innovations adopted are the ones that stand the best chance of succeeding.
