The Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG) was founded in 1968 by Lee Martin and annually recognizes and rewards literary excellence within the numismatic community. The NLG award banquet is usually part of its summer convention. This year, it was held in Baltimore, Maryland as part of the ANA 2008 World's Fair of Money. The American Numismatic Association (ANA) is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the collection and study of coins, paper money, tokens and medals. It is actively involved in educating and encouraging people to study, collect money and related items. Its membership consists of around 33,000 collectors, numismatist, academics and others who share an interest in numismatics.
The 2008 ANA event was a five-day affair that attracted experts in precious metals, world money, United States currency and coins. The U.S. Treasury Department provided a one billion dollar exhibit which included $100,000 bills, a 1913 Liberty Head nickel valued at three million dollars and many legendary, and seldom-seen early American coins from the Smithsonian's collections. One major rarity from their collection was a 1860 Paquet Reverse, an extremely rare and valuable coin worth at least a couple million dollars. There were also educational seminars and free appraisals of rare coins and paper money.
