Ascent Media has announced the forthcoming opening of an updated, state-of-the-art laboratory in the heart of Soho. Soho Film Labs constitutes a major strategic investment on behalf of Ascent Media, and confirms the group’s continued commitment to film and film restoration. The new facility will open its doors under new branding, officially on 4 August.
Soho Film Labs is the result of a consolidation of two existing laboratories (Todd-AO and Soho Images) into an improved, modernised laboratory with expanded capacity. The facility includes developing for colour, black and white 35mm and 16mm negative, printing and video transfer, and a rushes service for feature film, drama, light entertainment music, documentary and commercials. The company also provides services for sound syncing, and digital and photochemical restoration services.
Ascent Media Creative Services management team Simon Constable, VP Operations, David Barrett Senior Director, Business Development and Adrian Bull, CTO will oversee the further development of the business.
Simon Constable said: "Consolidating Soho Images and Todd-AO is a natural step in the evolution of our business. We are taking the best of two great labs to create one state-of-the-art facility, while still enjoying the same seamless operation and quality service they have come to expect. Customers will benefit from the investment made throughout the laboratory which includes the upgrade of our film developing and printing equipment. Additionally we are enhancing our HD and SD dailies services to mirror the demand we are experiencing.”
As part of this ongoing investment within its lab business, Ascent Media has also announced that Oliver Ronicle will be joining the company as director of film services at the beginning of August.
Ronicle will be responsible for the operational success of the newly consolidated film laboratory. He joins Soho Film Lab having spent the past eight years at Universal Studios as director of technical operations.
His role involved supervising all aspects of international post production for Universal and Working Title films. For the past two years Ronicle has focused on the distribution needs of the studio and has worked with laboratories all around the world and has a deep understanding of clients needs and all aspects of the lab business together with experience of the Digital Cinema process.
Ronicle said, “Our ability to combine a twenty-first century laboratory with cutting edge Digital Intermediate facilities right in the heart of Soho will provide an unrivalled service for feature film clients. The ability to handle a project from beginning to end, from processing through delivery, will offer tremendous efficiencies and value to our customers.”
