Exotissimo and Macmillan Cancer Research Partner Up

Macmillan Cancer Support and Exotissimo Travel teamed up to organize a reward for top fundraisers in the fight against cancer. The end result was the Macmillan Cambodia Hiking Challenge.

Thailand (PRWEB) August 21, 2008 -- Macmillan Cancer Support and Exotissimo Travel teamed up to organize a reward for top fundraisers in the fight against cancer. The end result was the Macmillan Cambodia Hiking Challenge. A total of 100 hearty adventurers were taken on a trip through Cambodia's rich past and evocative present as they trekked the villages and countryside surrounding Angkor Wat.

Macmillan provides medical, financial and counseling support to people living with cancer in the United Kingdom. 99% of the charity's funding comes from generous donors. Creating charity challenges like this one is part of their annual strategy. Participants had to raise £3,000 to partake in the challenge, and Macmillan held regular meetings to assist in their fundraising activities.

The groups found themselves trekking and camping for two days alongside the local Khmers, through villages and by local temples and schools. The area surrounding Siem Reap is not very populated, but everywhere the group went they encountered farmers and other locals in small numbers. The trip went through authentic villages and rice fields, with an interesting site to be seen around every corner.

The group also visited holy Kulen Mountain, where King Jayavarman II founded the Khmer Empire. The fact that Kulen also commands lovely views of the surrounding landscape was a nice bonus. The group spent a night at next to a waterfall by the mountain, where people bathed and swam after the day's hike. While trekking around Angkor Wat, the group stopped to "bathe" in the River of 1000 Lingas, admire the elaborate riverbed carvings and visit local schools.
