San Jose, California (PRWEB) August 25, 2008 - Henley-
Putnam University (http://www.henley-putnam.edu), a premier university for online higher education in the field of Strategic Security, is pleased to announce the inception of the Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society (DET), which represents the high and stellar academic achievements of students and graduates. Henley-Putnam University's chapter will be the Kappa chapter of California.
Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society, which is headquartered in Millville, DE and is recognized by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), is the premiere national honor society for America's accredited distance learning institutions. The DETC is a national accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA, and also accredits Henley-Putnam University. Any institution that wants to be a part of this honor society must be accredited by (DETC).
Those highly achieving students, who attain academic standards beyond reproach and meet the guidelines and criteria for membership (4.0 GPA), will receive national and international student recognition with a congratulatory letter, personalized Certificate of Membership and the DET Gold Key of Distinction. In addition, DET honorees will be able to reference Delta Epsilon Tau on all future resumes; receive lifetime membership with no annual dues; and receive a letter of reference as well as networking opportunities with other DET members and Chapters.
"We have always wanted to establish a recognized and well respected honor society for our students to carry them forward throughout their careers," said Dr. Michael Corcoran, Henley-Putnam University President. "It not only allows them to be proud of their accomplishments but it is a direct carry-over of our promise to provide our students with continuous support towards a successful future."
DET students will be recognized by a committee comprised of Henley-Putnam faculty and administrators, who select new inductees each year based on the current criteria for DET recognition. This selection will take place prior to the annual Henley-Putnam graduation ceremony. Each Chapter has flexibility in establishing its individual membership selection criteria. For full guidelines and criteria for membership please visit the Henley-Putnam University website at http://www.henley-putnam.edu.
The significance of DET's symbols, which mean Integrity and Excellence, are as follows:
- Delta, D, is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, and is symbolized by a triangle. This International Honor Society unites three groups: students, institutions and the Distance Education and Training Council.
- Epsilon, E, the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet stands for education and distinction. The "E" in Epsilon begins the Latin word "educo" or "educatum" and means to lead forth, to encourage aesthetic, mental, physical and moral development through instruction for business and the duties of life.
- Tau, T, the nineteenth letter of the Greek alphabet means to instill good character. Tau brings recognition and praise for those who have worked with perseverance and successfully in their field of study.
- The Torch of Knowledge represents the shining light of continuous and lifelong learning.
Established in 1997, DET members currently represent 25 colleges and universities in 14 states, including Ashworth University in Atlanta, GA, and Columbia Southern University in Alabama.
