Akron, Ohio, hometown musical heroes The Black Keys have thrown their support behind the Road Runner Akron Marathon by allowing one of their songs to be featured in TV and radio spots promoting the race.

Akron marketing communications agency Hitchcock Fleming & Associates Inc. (hfa), which produced the spots, chose the hard-driving song "I Got Mine" from The Black Keys' newest release, Attack and Release, on the Nonesuch label. It was a creative choice that showcased the raw energy and power of The Black Keys' music and encouraged marathon runners to "Get your rush!"

Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney of The Black Keys were glad to help, without having to break a sweat. "We wanted to do something to support our hometown race - either donate a song or run a two-person relay," Auerbach said. "We couldn't find the right jogging outfits, so we decided to go with the first option."

"hfa always enjoys supporting the Road Runner Akron Marathon, and this year is no exception," said Nick Betro, VP/executive creative director at hfa. "The Black Keys generously allowed hfa's creative team to choose a song to support the tag line we've developed to inspire runners - 'Get Ready, Get Running … and Get Your Rush.' The song, 'I Got Mine,' captures the spirit of the marathon with a raw energy and power that only The Black Keys could offer."

In the TV spot, the song accompanies footage from previous races, turning the lyric "I got mine" into a call-to-action. The song's powerful opening riff is used to great effect in the radio spot, which builds on the sense of urgency expressed through hfa's tag line.

"I've had the great pleasure of seeing The Black Keys in concert and appreciate the strong connection they have with Akron," said race founder Steve Marks. "It didn't take a leap of faith for me to realize this is a perfect fit." He enlisted the help of Dan's uncle, Tim Quine, who chairs the marathon's marketing committee and handled details of the project with hfa and Creative Technology.

The band's songs have been featured in several high-profile campaigns, including commercials produced by Sony Ericsson, Victoria's Secret, Nissan and American Express. With The Black Keys supporting this event, the Road Runner Akron Marathon is in good company.

Road Runner Akron Marathon title sponsor Time Warner Cable and gold sponsor Rubber City Radio Group (WQMX FM, WONE FM and WAKR AM) are running the spots on a variety of programs through September 26, the day before the big event.

The spots were edited by local TV production firm Creative Technology.

The Road Runner Akron Marathon is organized by the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation, a nonprofit group that is dedicated to promoting health and fitness.
