Proper Fertilization In The Upcoming Autumn Months Causes Your Lawn to Thrive In Spring

Natural Way Lawn Care of Lake Orion, Michigan urges homeowners to apply fall fertilizer to help protect their lawn in winter months. If done correctly, it can put your lawn's growth far ahead of all your neighbors in the spring.

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) August 28, 2008 -- Natural Way Lawn Care of Lake Orion, Michigan urges homeowners to apply fall fertilizer to help protect their lawn in winter months. If done correctly, it can put your lawn's growth far ahead of all your neighbors in the spring.

"Late fall lawn fertilization is often overlooked, but is one of the most important applications for the overall health of your lawn." Keith Fetzner, owner of Natural Way says.

This is especially true this year, when the National Weather Service has predicted above normal temperatures for December 2008 through February 2009. This could place your lawn at higher risk for injury during the winter, because the ground is softer at warm temperatures.

Proper application of fertilizer is essential, because overfertilizing can cause a deadly fungus called "Snow Mold" to grow during the winter, leaving your lawn with huge brown areas when the snow melts.

The only way to tell specifically what type of fertilizer your lawn needs in the fall is by doing a soil test. But in general, fertilizer with a slow-release nitrogen source should be applied in late August through early September.

A final quick release nitrogen fertilizer application should be applied sometime during the month of November. This is sometimes called "winterizer" fertilizer and will get your lawn ready to survive the winter months.

These lawn care instructions can vary depending on the type of grass your lawn contains, composition of the soil, the weather in your area, and the overally health of your grass.

Usually soil testing and lawn health evaluation should be performed by a professional. It may be best to call a lawn fertilization specialist to determine exactly what your lawn needs.
