Latham Performance Products -- 'Cool Your Tools' -- High Pressure Coolant Systems: A Very Cool Business

Latham Performance Products unveils their new tagline: "Cool Your Tools" and shows their top-quality CNC coolant systems at the International Manufacturing Trechnology Show (IMTS) at Chicago's McCormick Place. Latham's HIgh Pressure Coolant System dramatically increases cooling at the cutting zone and provides for better chip and particle evacuation for better performance.

Latham's products are trouble-free

After 35 years of inventing and creating systems, equipment and custom products for the marine industry, Bob Latham remained true to his own history and revolutionized the metal working industry. When what he needed did not exist, he personally created it from scratch. As a largely self-taught engineer, Latham understands the mechanics, structure and goal of a product and has the innate skill to build "the better mouse trap."

While racing powerboats in the early '70s, he put his mind to addressing the problem of repeated breaking of steering systems. He created a hydraulic steering system for a client's race boat and put Latham Marine in the history books of performance boating. Fifteen years later, when he was machining all his own marine parts in-house, he saw the need for a high-pressure coolant system for his CNC machines. The ones on the market just didn't work the way he wanted, so he designed and built his own.

As a good customer of Method Machine Tools, Latham showed his high pressure coolant (HPC) system to company vice president David Chesnutt, who recognized the superior quality of Latham's systems over others on the market. Chestnutt has since become a distributor for Latham Performance Products, the company that Latham created to market his new systems.

"Latham's products are trouble-free," states Chesnutt, "They have the best product in the industry, they stand behind everything they produce and it makes my job easier." Chesnutt sold cutting and drilling machines to Latham for over 20 years, so the segue to being his representative was smooth. "We work hand-in-hand," Chestnutt says, "We sell Latham Performance Products to small companies or to some larger ones like Caterpillar Inc. and John Deere--several are Fortune 500 companies."

The diversity of the Latham companies has kept both economically sound since their beginning. Part of the credit goes to Kathy Latham, Bob's wife and business partner, for running the financial side of the company. "My husband is an engineering genius," she states matter-of-factly, "Everything he builds is over-engineered, beyond industry standards. That is why our products are respected for their quality and product liability is not an issue."

The advent of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining has radically changed the metal working industry and machining. Whether drilling, cutting, grinding or any number of machining operations, the speed and feed of CNC machines can push the cutting tools to the designed limits and beyond. This high intensity use creates intense heat at the cutting zones of the tooling. Latham's High Pressure Coolant System dramatically increases cooling at the cutting zone and provides better chip evacuation. Latham coolant systems also provide better surface finishes, improved consistency and increased tool life. Latham reports, "In some cases machining times have been reduced by 30%."

Latham Performance Products are built with the top craftsmanship that customers expect from a Latham company. Durability, specific system design, reliable electrical components and an exclusive sound reduction system set Latham Performance Products apart from and above its competitors.
