E-Verify (formerly known as the Basic Pilot/Employment Eligibility Verification Program) is an Internet-based system operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration. The system allows employers to electronically verify a new employee’s name, date of birth, and social security number, along with validating immigration information for non-citizens, against Federal database records in order to verify an individual’s identity and employment eligibility.
The voluntary Federal program is already mandated for employers in some States, including Arizona, where SmartSearch supports a number of clients subject to the E-Verification of candidates' eligibility to work in the United States.
The SmartSearch integration with the E-Verify system further streamlines hiring and I-9 compliance processes, and provides results in seconds. This new functionality helps employers maintain a legal workforce, improves the accuracy of wage and tax reporting, and virtually eliminates Social Security mismatches.

The new functionality provides SmartSearch users with improved ability to avoid penalties and fines for non-compliance with State law and possible future legislation. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have already reached an agreement that reauthorizes the E-Verify program for another five years, despite lingering doubts in the Senate.
In the Senate, lawmakers are seeking to address other immigration issues by inserting immigration-related amendments into the E-Verify reauthorization bill. However, following the announcement of the House legislation, several Republican senators sent Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) a letter urging him to bring to the floor a clean bill that would reauthorize E-Verify without changes.
While Congress has until November 1, 2008 to reauthorize the E-Verify program, many lawmakers believe that the longer Congress waits to act, the harder it is going to be to reauthorize E-Verify, particularly because of this year's presidential and congressional election campaigns. However, even if Congress fails to reauthorize the E-Verify program, the legislature can continue to fund it so it remains operational, which makes it very unlikely that the program will go away.
