Sanbolic's Clustered File System Enables Hyper-V Virtual Machines to Share Access to Application Data on SAN Storage Volumes

Virtual machines running on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V can now use Melio FS from Sanbolic to share access to application data on SAN volumes and maintain access to application data, even when virtual servers are migrated between physical host servers.

Bellevue, WA (PRWEB) September 7, 2008 -- Virtual machines running on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V can now share access to application data on SAN volumes and maintain access to application data, even when virtual servers are migrated between physical host servers. Sanbolic's Melio clustered file system addresses a shortcoming of virtualization across all major platforms - an inability to share application data between multiple virtual machines, resulting in an inflexible storage platform for virtual data centers. Also announced today is the deployment of Melio FS to provide shared data access to Hyper-V Virtual Machines for two new customers -- MLS Property Information Network, the largest real estate multiple listing service in the Northeast, and RackForce, one of the fastest growing hosting companies in North America.

Melio FS has been available since Q1 2008 for Hyper-V to provide functionality similar to VMWare's VMFS, allowing all virtual machines file to be stored on the same SAN storage volume, while being simultaneously available to all hosts. This simplifies storage management while enabling migration of virtual machines across hosts. Today's newly announced functionality lets all virtual machines have simultaneous access to application data on the SAN. This functionality is not available with VMware's VMFS.

"Many customers are beginning to realize that storage management and storage I/O performance are central to the overall performance and manageability of their virtualized environments" said Dave Russell, a storage analyst at Gartner, Inc. "Being able to provide multiple paths to the data, and concurrent read/write access to application data using a high performance, low latency SAN storage fabric enhances application availability, and also provides flexibility to scale applications and improve performance of tiered applications."

Sanbolic's Melio clustered file system and LaScala volume manager are designed to support Windows applications which benefit from central administration of a large virtual storage pool simultaneously accessed by multiple physical or virtual servers. Melio FS uses 64 bit architecture, allowing very large volume and file system sizes. These products install easily on physical or virtual servers, and can utilize any fibre channel or iSCSI storage hardware. Windows active directory, DFS, and clustering features are supported. Reporting on storage I/O and transaction performance facilitates optimization of storage intensive workloads. The file system also incorporates quality of service assignment to allow prioritization of defined workloads in storage bandwidth-constrained environments.

Key benefits of Melio FS in Hyper-V environments include:

  • Multiple paths to application data for availability
  • Multiple virtual servers to run the same application using the same data for scalability
  • High performance shared data for multi-tier applications. For example, multiple virtual servers can write data to a shared volume and be made immediately available to the web via multiple web servers sharing the same volume
  • A Melio formatted volume can be accessed by virtual machines running Windows, or by physical servers running Windows, or both

Sanbolic software currently supports Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows Server 2008. Sanbolic distributes its product solutions worldwide through a network of distributors, OEMs, VARs and system integrators.

Sanbolic will be exhibiting this solution at the Microsoft Virtualization Launch in Bellevue, Washington on September and at VMworld 2008 in Las Vegas September 15-18.
