Internet, electronic communications emerging as the most effective coaching methods

Coaching 2.0 – The Future of Health Coaching

Recent research indicates that the 87 percent of health insurance claims are lifestyle related. Clearly health coaching for behavior change holds huge promise for controlling escalating healthcare costs. With rapidly changing communication within the culture, “any time coaching” seems to hold the most promise for success among wellness programs.

In a new white paper, “Coaching 2.0 – The Future of Health Coaching,” available for download at http://hummingbirdcoaching.com/default.aspx?tabid=7316, Dr. Neal Mayerson, chairman of Hummingbird Coaching Services, describes the way electronic communications has revolutionized current coaching relationships.

“Personal support is critical for employees to make and sustain behavior changes,” said Mayerson. “This is where coaching shines compared to static health information on Web pages or other health education programs. Its effectiveness is further enhanced when coaching leverages the convenience of email and electronic communication – “any-time coaching.”

Until recently, health coaching has primarily been delivered by phone or face-to-face, requiring that the coach and the employee set appointed times for the session for “real time” interaction. Asynchronous communications such as email and text messaging and a coaching model designed specific to this approach changes this dramatically. People are now accustomed to communicating independently, whenever and wherever it is most convenient.

Mayerson explained that when people talk they don’t focus on brevity, yet in electronic communications, they tend to be brief and concise. So any-time coaching enables both convenience and efficiency, encouraging a greater number of interactions. The result is a greater degree of trust, engagement, outcomes, and a lower cost structure.
