I felt that editorially, music video is a such a unique genre and the process of creating the cut is so intricate, that it's endlessly exciting as discussion. Music fans themselves now have the tools and want to make their own videos. We feel compelled to share our inside stories and techniques.

Britney Spears' music video "Piece Of Me" won three awards at the famed MTV Video Music Awards 2008: Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and the top prize, Video of the Year. Last year at the 2007 VMA's, Rihanna's music video "Umbrella" also won the coveted Video of the Year Award - a first for Rihanna as well.
What is the only thing these two videos have in common? Their editor - both winners had the magic touch of editor Nabil Mechi, of Murex Films & Editorial. About the Spears' video for "Pieces Of Me" directed by Wayne Isham, Nabil says: "The lyrics in the song are Britney's personal life being poured out to her fans. The Paparazzi's concept that Wayne came up with for the video played right into it. That made it very special."
Mechi is credited as editor on the Fountains of Wayne video "Stacy's Mom" which was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 plus over 30 # 1 music video hits worldwide with artists such as Sting, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Pussy Cat Dolls, Natasha Bedingfield, Keith Urban, Jewel, Kid Rock, Roots, Leann Rimes, Jessica Simpson and Santana. "I feel fortunate to be given creative freedom from great directors to play with the footage and come up with original editorial ideas" says Nabil.
Along with Valentina Ganeva, Nabil created the post-production studio, Murex, and together they provide editorial services for a 'Who's Who" list of talented, well known directors including Chris Applebaum, Thomas Kloss, Melina Matsoukas, Jessy Terrero, Alan Ferguson, Darren Grant, Nigel Dick, Roman Coppola, Dave Meyers, Chris Robinson, Paul Boyd, and Sanji.
Murex Films & Editorial's incredible track record with music videos has attracted worldwide sensation generating commercials including the Paris Hilton's scandalous star turn in the Carl's Jr. Ad that featured her super "hot" self washing a Bentley in a Gucci bikini while munching on a burger. Located one block away from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, 2008 marks Murex's success-filled 10th Anniversary.
The pair's next endeavor goes beyond Avid edit magic, to writing a book on the subject of editing music videos and commercials. Valentina Ganeva came up with the idea for the book. " I felt that editorially, music video is a such a unique genre and the process of creating the cut is so intricate, that it's endlessly exciting as discussion. Music fans themselves now have the tools and want to make their own videos. We feel compelled to share our inside stories and techniques." says Valentina.
