Enterprise and Small-to-Midsize Business (SMB) adoption of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) jumps 33 and 58 percent year-over-year, respectively. Akamai attributes large part of demand for its Web Application Accelerator service to SaaS providers requiring global reach and optimized application performance.

In recent surveys of technology decision-makers, Forrester found that 16 percent of large enterprises and 15 percent of SMBs are using SaaS. This represents a 33 percent increase in the large enterprise sector from the previous year, and a 58 percent increase in the SMB segment

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leader in powering rich media, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, today announced growing demand for its Web Application Accelerator(SM) service from the enterprise and small-to-medium business segments. As the market for dynamic, on-demand applications experiences substantial year-over-year growth, SaaS providers including Autotask, Concur, LogicBay, PowerSteering, Responsys and Vocus, are reporting increased user satisfaction, and the ability to quickly extend market reach and launch new solutions, leveraging Akamai.

"In recent surveys of technology decision-makers, Forrester found that 16 percent of large enterprises and 15 percent of SMBs are using SaaS. This represents a 33 percent increase in the large enterprise sector from the previous year, and a 58 percent increase in the SMB segment," writes Forrester Research in an April 2008 report, SaaS Clients Face Growing Complexity. In a separate Forrester Research April 2008 report, Vendors: Get Ready For Business SaaS/Web 2.0 Majority Adoption, nearly 60 percent of surveyed decision makers reported application performance as a reason they are "not at all interested" in SaaS, according to a Q3 2007 survey.

As SaaS providers get ready to 'cross the chasm' to early majority adoption, they are looking to optimize their own business models by eliminating the need to deploy and manage global data centers in response to worldwide demand. Akamai's global application delivery network leverages technology that addresses the weaknesses inherent to the Internet by detecting and avoiding problems and vulnerabilities -- something infrastructure build out alone cannot deliver. With Akamai, SaaS providers can again focus on their business rather than IT-centric issues.

A wide variety of dynamic, on-demand offerings -- including customer relationship management, supply chain and supplier relationship management, project management, human resources and talent management, e-learning, public relations and marketing solutions -- are being accelerated by Akamai. Recently deployed customers leveraging Akamai's Web Application Accelerator service include:

  • Autotask, the leading provider of web-based business management software for outsourced IT service companies
  • Concur, the world's leading provider of on-demand business services that automate employee spend management
  • LogicBay Corporation, a leading enterprise dealer and sales channel performance improvement company
  • PowerSteering, the only on-demand, enterprise PPM software used to manage information technology, six sigma, product development and other enterprise initiatives
  • Responsys, a leading global provider of on-demand email and marketing automation solutions
  • Vocus, Inc., a leading provider of on-demand software for public relations management

"Software as a service companies recognize the importance of fast and reliable performance of their on-demand applications," said Brad Rinklin, vice president of Global Marketing for Akamai. "Regardless of their locations, users have no patience for inconsistent or poor performing business applications. Akamai is pleased to be in the unique position to help these innovative technology companies focus on the richness and functionality of their applications rather than addressing the inconsistent quality of the public Internet."

Akamai's Web Application Accelerator service leverages Akamai's globally-deployed platform to deliver consistent, improved application performance for enterprise customers and SaaS providers. Akamai accelerates customers' dynamic Web applications using a number of unique techniques including dynamic mapping, route optimization, advanced communications protocols and connection optimization technology. As a result, Akamai customers may enjoy increased user adoption of applications for greater productivity and decreased support costs.
