Since 2001, Telekom Austria's subsidiary mobilkom has initiated partnership and merchant agreements to foster massive nationwide adoption of m-commerce services. Directly enabled for the service, all postpaid subscribers can pay for parking and public transportation, pay at several thousand vending machines and in cabs, shop online, top-up any prepaid phone and play the lottery. All other mobile subscribers can sign up for paybox services online at any time.
Most significant is mobilkom's partnership with competitive operator ONE to position paybox as an interoperable m-payment service initiated in 2005. By further integrating T-Mobile and tele.ring as strategic partners in the Austrian cross-operator m-payment platform, Austria has extended its prime position as a leading market for m-commerce services worldwide.
