Speech Technology Magazine Award Recognizes Influence, Inspiration

Expectations are very high and only the accomplishments that truly stand out receive this recognition.

Voxeo Corporation, a leading provider of IVR and VoIP platforms and services, today announced its Director of Speech Technologies, Daniel Burnett, has been awarded the "Speech Luminary" distinction by the editors of Speech Technology magazine. The prestigious award recognizes industry professionals who have worked tirelessly to advance the causes of their respective companies or organizations, and to increase awareness and acceptance of speech technologies for the industry.

"Only the most dedicated individuals are recognized," says David Myron, editor-in-chief, Speech Technology Magazine. "Expectations are very high and only the accomplishments that truly stand out receive this recognition."

Dr. Burnett is responsible for all of the company's speech recognition products and research. He leads the research, development and implementation of the company's own speech recognition and text-to-speech products, and integrates technology from leading speech recognition providers.

Prior to joining Voxeo in 2007, Dr. Burnett served a senior member of the technical staffs at SBC Labs, Nuance and Vocalocity. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from the Center for Spoken Language Research at the Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI) School of Science and Engineering and is regarded as one of the most effective standards leaders in the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C).

Over the past nine years Dr. Burnett has led many speech recognition efforts in the W3C, serving as chief editor of Speech Synthesis Markup Language versions 1.0 and 1.1; editor of VoiceXML 2.0, 2.1, and 3.0 and Media Resource Control Protocol v2; author of the Extensible Multi-Modal Annotation specification, Pronunciation Lexicon Specification, and State Chart XML; and a contributor to the Speech Recognition Grammar Specification, Semantic Interpretation for Speech Recognition, and the multimodal framework documents of the Multimodal Interaction Working Group.

"Dan has organized and conducted workshops in China, Greece, and India to identify requirements to make the W3C's Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) more useful in current and emerging marketsHe organized and led an international team of experts to sift through requirements, analyze alternative strategies, and define extensions that enable SSML to represent the various aspects of human language pronunciation. Through these efforts I believe Dan has brought the world a little closer together by helping to create a single computer language that can represent how people speak around the world," said James A. Larson, Co-chair, W3C Voice Browser Working Group.

"I feel truly honored to have received this award. The importance of standards work to the speech industry is clear. It's a privilege to be a part of the process and to be recognized for my efforts and I thank Speech Technology Magazine for this distinction," said Dr. Burnett.
