AmericaFree.TV, LLC (AFTV), a leading Internet Television broadcaster with feature length movies, independent films, and public domain video content, announced today the appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Porro as Chief of Content Acquisition. Porro, head of Porro Associates, LLC, and a Washington-area speechwriter and screenwriter, has deep connections with the independent filmmaker community.
Porro is responsible for the story behind the critically acclaimed movie "The Great Debaters," directed by and starring Denzel Washington, and produced by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions. The story tells of a historically black college and its triumph over an Ivy League school in the days of Jim Crow laws and extreme prejudice. Porro and his collaborator Robert Eisele, received a Screenwriter's Guild Award for their work.
Marshall Eubanks, CEO of AmericaFree.TV, said Porro will complement the management team. "Jeff is a renaissance man who found the perfect vehicle for a script, shopped it and helped option the story to Harpo and then stayed with the process until it was produced," said Eubanks. "He understands the sometimes winding road of independent filmmaking. We are convinced that AFTV, will become the 'indy's best friend' by providing a location for people to air movies free on the Internet. AmericaFree.TV offers advertising revenue splits to filmmakers so we can get them a return on their work."
Porro was named Chief of Content Acquisition and will work with AFTV agency of record and partner Crispin, Porter + Bogusky on acquiring content and developing new channels. AFTV has more than 20 channels of movie content, over 2000 hours of streaming media, and a loyal viewership base of over 10 million people worldwide.
"For anyone, especially an independent, who wants to see their script idea get made and find an audience, the internet is perfect," said Porro. "Emerging screenwriters, directors and producers want exposure, but a lot of terrific films don't get picked by Sundance or South-by-Southwest, or Toronto. They need an outlet for more audience and for creative distribution. I think AFTV provides that. We also provide indies at least a small amount of revenue through the ad share system to continue making great films."
Porro, a Ph.D. added that his background at UCLA and connections with Hollywood agents, producers and directors will provide access to great content for AFTV. "I wanted to keep my hand in the entertainment business and help other artists realize their dream of seeing their projects reach the screen."
