Doctor Sound Prescribes Deliberate Overdose for Football Addicts

The start of a new season again brings to light the darker side of pro football: fan addiction. Doctor Sound Home Theater now offers the best cure - total immersion via DirecTV's Sunday Ticketâ„¢ Superfan® package, which now delivers a high-definition, simultaneous split-screen presentation of eight live games.

Doctor Sound has treated football addiction for years. It comes with the territory in Texas, where football handily beats baseball, hot dogs, apple pie - and, sadly, Mom - in the minds of male TV viewers. The doctor calls the situation "serious, but not fatal."

The search for the cure led Doctor Sound unwaveringly to DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticketâ„¢ Superfan® package, and the decision now to become a DirecTV dealer. That means one call to Doctor Sound is all that is required to start on the road to recovery.

At first blush, the Sunday Ticket package might appear to be the worst way to treat such a strong psychological need. Not so, says Keith Prather, president of Doctor Sound Home Theater, Inc.

"Football addiction is unusual in that the best treatment seems to be not abstinence, but total immersion," Prather said. "At least, that's what our customers tell us. Once we install DirecTV with the Superfan package their symptoms improved dramatically."

The NFL Sunday Ticket package allows National Football League fans to see live broadcasts of games around the league that are not broadcast in the fans' local areas. That can be a serious problem for a Dallas fan living in Boston, for example.

For the seriously addicted pro football fan, one game at a time is not enough, and twin-image split-screen views available on most TV sets fall short of the mark. The Superfan package has a handy feature called Game Mix, which displays eight separate games simultaneously, in high definition. Graphics show each game's score, quarter of play and time remaining. Viewers can switch audio channels from game to game.

Other features include the Red Zone Channel, another high-def service that automatically switches from game to game as plays of interest happen, such as scores and turnovers. Another feature, Short Cuts, provides complete summaries of every NFL game. Summaries are shown continuously Sunday evenings through Tuesday mornings, one channel for NFC games, one for AFC.

Prather says being a DirecTV dealer adds an important new element to Doctor Sound's array of services, which include home theater, sound and lighting system design and installation. "We've always been in the infrastructure business, now we supply content, as well," he said. "People don't even need to call DirecTV to get this service; Doctor Sound handles all the details and installation."
