The Mecum Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois on October 3-5 will feature the sale of a one of the most significant roadsters built in the past 14 years, the 1929 Infiniti Q29. There is no greater prize in the world of hot rodding than "America's Most Beautiful Roadster"; conferred annually at the celebrated Grand National Roadster Show in California to the car that best exemplifies the contemporary art of the roadster. This car achieved that goal at the 1994 Oakland Roadster Show and then followed up with a "best Appearing" win at the Detroit Motorama.
The Q29 Infiniti Flyer Show Rod was hand built by Joseph MacPherson for the Oakland Roadster Show. MacPherson engaged famed California rodders Art and Mike Christman to bring their skill and experience to the project. The Christman brothers had a long history of building great roadsters and were able to attract a corps of other eminent craftsmen to make the car what it ended up being - America's Most Beautiful Roadster! In the course of the project, the team included not only the Christman brothers, but also Steve Davis, Squeak White, Junior Conway, Tony Nancy and Phil Remington. As the car developed, the a local Infiniti representative stepped in with the Q45 engine and first Japanese-powered AMBR-winning rod was born.
Tom Mayfield and Bill Larzelere did the final prep and detail the night before the 1994 Oakland Roadster Show, while MacPherson hosted a celebration party for his team and families. The next day the car rocked the hot rodding world by winning every award at the show: best paint, interior, engineering and, of course, the coveted "America's Most Beautiful Roadster. Hot Rod Magazine's very own Gray Baskerville once said it was impossible to adequately present this masterpiece, but Mecum Auctions will do its best when it is featured at Pheasant Run this October.
