DataBank Deploys Flywheel UPS System for Critical Data Center Expansion
4800 kVA System to Provide Power Protection to Mission Critical Facility
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) September 21, 2008 --DataBank Holdings Ltd., a provider of high-end managed data center services, announced today that it has deployed Caterpillar's CAT UPS (uninterruptible power supply) 4800 kVA system as a part of its facility expansion in Dallas, Texas. The flywheel based systems were installed in a parallel configuration and are capable of providing up to 4800 kVA of conditioned power to DataBank's new 40,000 square foot data center located in the former Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas at 400 S. Akard St. The system will protect the data center from power disturbances including sags, fluctuations and outages and is a bridging source of energy to diesel generators in the event of a significant power outage.
"We are very excited to deploy this technology in our new data center," says Patrick Guadalajara, President of DataBank. "We have more than 3000 kVA in battery UPS deployed today that supports our current data center operations and are quite happy with them, but we will sleep a little better knowing the flywheels are spinning and there isn't the potential for a battery cell or string failure. With this deployment, we will also achieve substantial space savings and maintenance cost reductions. Battery cabinets are bulky and battery testing and rotation gets expensive over the life of the UPS. The flywheel product allows us to use more kVA out of our generator plant which equates to more watts per square foot resulting in more revenue for the site."
DataBank's new data center boasts a 24 inch raised floor and contains more than four megawatts of initial UPS power with N+1 emergency generator backup. The center will also be cooled by over 1,500 tons of cooling; protected with biometric access; 24x7 CCTV (closed circuit television) monitoring; and on-site security personnel.
