The Center for eBusiness and Advanced IT (eBizITPA), a Pennsylvania-based technology development organization, provided crucial assistance to first responders and government workers in Pasadena, Texas in the wake of Hurricane Ike which slammed the Texas coast on September 12th and 13th. Pasadena, one of the fastest growing cities in Texas, lies approximately 15 miles southeast of Houston's center, near where the eye of the storm made landfall.
One Link LLC has developed a proprietary telecom switching technology that enables multi-channel radio communications through a stationary satellite feed. It also enables telephone and cellular communications when power systems are down. Made possible through a sponsorship from eBizITPA, One Link LLC owner Terry Lewis drove his Emergency Management Interoperable Telephone System (EMITS) system to the Texas Coast and was tasked by the city of Pasadena to run its 911 system that was inoperable in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane. Additionally, EMITS has been providing all emergency phone communication for city government and the Pasadena Police Department. Both the 911 Center and all government resources in Pasadena have been experiencing extremely high call volumes and the technology, in its first major deployment, has worked flawlessly. Nearly 3,000 calls have been handled on the emergency lines as of late afternoon on September 16th.
"By Sunday, Pasadena had lost both its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and back-up EOC, including all 911 services because of Hurricane Ike," said Vance Mitchell, Public Information Officer for the Pasadena Police Department. "If it weren't for One Link LLC and Terry Lewis, we don't know how we could have communicated with our citizens or kept them informed."
One Link LLC is a West Virginia based company. eBizITPA has been working to develop local contacts and partnerships with the goal of brokering mutually beneficial public and private opportunities for both the company and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
"The EMITS system is a glowing example of ways technology can efficiently be used to solve real-world problems. At eBizITPA, we are always adapting to attract and deploy technology that can fill market needs and hopefully, contribute to the greater good of society," said Grethe Lindemann, Executive Director of eBizITPA. "One of our emerging focus areas is public safety. With EMITS being a springboard, we anticipate dedicating more resources to remote communications, intelligence technology and public safety in the near future."
