Palladium (Pd), atomic number 46, one of the six Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), offers a naturally white-silvery appearance, almost half the weight of platinum and is 12% harder.

"Palladium has been used for mainsprings in watches, some surgical instruments and as electrical contacts," said John Weritz, metallurgy manager for a large alloy company in Alabama. "These applications require high strength, hardness and temperature resistance. Because of its ability to absorb hydrogen, it is also used to purify it." Mr. Weritz discusses how Palladium can absorb up to 500 times its volume in hydrogen at room temperature and releases it at high temperatures.
