Renowned author Mary Stanton tackles a heavenly topic in her thirty-third book, Defending Angels. The first release in Stanton's new Beaufort & Company series, Defending Angels (Berkley Prime Crime, ISBN: 978-0425-224984) will be available nationwide on December 2, 2008.
Stanton, who has been writing professionally most of her adult life, has written both fantasy novels as Mary Stanton, and mysteries, including the Hemlock Falls and the Dr. McKenzie series under nom de plume Claudia Bishop. In all, Stanton has written nineteen mystery novels, two adult fantasy novels, and eleven novels for middle-grade readers, including the successful series, The Unicorns of Balinor.
In Defending Angels, Stanton combines those two areas of fiction she's kept separate in the past. According to Stanton, "There were unexpected difficulties in bringing the two genres together. While fantasy is typically epic in scope, mysteries are a genre of law and order, and the traditional crime novel, of course, is very much in the here and now. I love both genres, and I wanted to treat them with equal respect. Readers will be able to tell me if I've been successful.
Defending Angels, which blends elements of fantasy and murder mystery, is the story of Brianna "Bree" Winston-Beaufort. Twenty-eight years old and fresh out of Duke law school, Bree, the oldest daughter of a wealthy, eccentric South Carolina family, is fed up with the loving but stifling interference of her parents and siblings. Determined to build a law practice on her own terms, Bree packs up a U-Haul and moves to Savannah, Georgia. But unbeknownst to Bree, she'll be seeking justice from a higher court, as she's about to launch a career defending the dead.
According to award-winning author Rhys Bowen, Defending Angels "should give Mary Stanton the same kind of cult following usually reserved for Charlaine Harris."
Moreover, adds best-selling author Madelyn Alt, "Spooky Southern charm and a wonderfully inventive approach to the afterlife with a celestial twist makes Mary Stanton's Defending Angels a real stand-out. Brava!"
Mary Stanton divides her time between an 850-head goat farm in upstate New York, and West Palm Beach, Florida. Defending Angels is her thirty-third novel. Defending Angels will be available where better books are sold on December 2, 2008. For more information, please contact Maryglenn McCombs by phone - (615) 297-9875.
