The Historic Speedway Group (HSG) of Hillsborough, NC has taken on the awesome task of preserving an important piece of NASCAR history. The Occoneechee Speedway was the location for the 3rd NASCAR sanctioned "Strictly Stock" event on august 7, 1949. The 9/10 mile dirt track offered some of the most exciting and memorable racing for NASCAR's elite series until its closing in 1968. With names like the Flock brothers, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Ned Jarrett, Cotton Owens, David Pearson, Junior Johnson and many more making their mark at this historic oval, one has to feel the passion behind the effort of the HSG.
