One of the biggest myths about the grief that accompanies pet loss is that it's somehow different than grieving the loss of a human. When we love and we lose that love, whether it's a human or an animal, we feel grief.

Brea, CA (PRWEB) January 10, 2008 -- Peternity.com, a place that helps people honor their pets for eternity, today announced its line of pet memorial products. The website provides custom pet artwork and products including pet memorial stones and grave markers, cremation pet urns, garden statue pet memorials, pet memorial headstones, pet keepsake boxes, pet portraits, glass art, burial boxes, custom engraved glasswork, and more.

When Colleen Mihelich started Peternity.com in 2003, it was because of a lifetime of her love for animals and an understanding of the deep grief associated with their death. She remembered the pain of losing her quarter horse Pepper, when she was 16, due to a sudden and rare muscle disease. Since many of us have been touched by the loss of a beloved pet, and she understands the heartache of that loss, Mihelich chose to develop the concept of Peternity as her vocation, dedicated to helping others honor the love they have shared and grieve the loss of their pets.

According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) 2007-2008 National Pet Owners survey, 63 percent of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.1 million homes, up from 56 percent in 1988. APPMA estimated spending of $40.8 billion on pets in the U.S. in 2007.

Mihelich knew that although Pepper was gone, the love she felt would never go away. That's why she decided that people needed a place where they could memorialize their pets to help keep their memories alive. She decided to create an online community, a pet memorial website called Peternity.com, where grieving pet owners could choose handcrafted pet memorial products including custom pet grave markers, memorial pet urns, garden statue pet memorial stones, keepsake boxes, pet portrait and art and tribute paintings, glass art and burial boxes.

Mihelich and her team are continually looking for unique, handcrafted pieces of art to help her customers express their love, joy and memories. She believes pets deserve nothing less than the very best, so she searches for items of the finest quality and workmanship so that people can honor their cherished friends with elegance, dignity and honor.

"We've all been through the difficult grief of losing pets, and people, and understand how hard it can be. Many of us found little nuggets of wisdom or inspirational stories along the way that have helped us move on," said Mihelich. "Losing a pet is a difficult thing and grieving the loss is a very important step toward healing; just as important as grieving the loss of a human. But because everyone's beliefs about grief, spirituality and grieving animals vary, at Peternity.com, we offer several different points of view."

Peternity.com provides grieving support so that people can find links to pet loss information and pet loss counseling websites to help them say goodbye to their beloved pet. This is particularly helpful for parents assisting children with the loss of a pet.

According to bereavement counselor Marty Tousley, "One of the biggest myths about the grief that accompanies pet loss is that it's somehow different than grieving the loss of a human. When we love and we lose that love, whether it's a human or an animal, we feel grief."

Website guests can create virtual pet memorials via a living pet memorial to share loving memories and favorite stories about their precious pets with family and friends, including a written tribute, and dialog and photographs that honor their pet's memory.

Pet cremation services are offered through most veterinary clinics and although private crematorium prices vary, the average costs are between $75 and $350, dependent upon the size of the pet. Individual cremation means that the pet will share space with others, but they will be separated, and owners are assured of receiving the remains afterward. Mass cremation is the least expensive option, from $30 to $100, but the ashes will not be returned. Should the family choose to receive the pet ashes back from the crematorium, they must decide on private burial, either in their yard or in a vessel to keep or for spreading.

Peternity offers hand crafted, unique pet urns and engraved stone pet memorials and pet grave markers in marble, genuine river rock, cultured river rock, cultured slate, black granite and bluestone, which are hand selected and laser engraved, and range from $55 to $290 . Pet ash urns can be purchased in ceramic, marble, riverstone or precious woods. Velvet pet cremains pouch's can be purchased for $5.00, ceramic pet cremation urns for $98, while hand turned precious wood urns for pet ashes come in mahogany-blood wood for $400 or $600 for a large hand turned precious poplar-blood wood pet urn. Unique riverstone dog urns are available in two sizes and cost up to $500. Tumbled marble keepsake boxes at $130 hold a small bag of pet ashes and can be engraved. Engraved garden statues for $127 can be placed in a flower bed or anywhere in a yard.

"It would be impossible to tell you how much we appreciate all you did in helping us with our stone for Buddy. It is just beautiful and we couldn't possibly be happier with how it turned out," said Alan and Stephanie Thomas. "We've already told some of our friends about the wonderful job you did for us, and you can bet that we will tell others who might be interested in that special touch that your markers provide. It really is a special line of work you're in, and it must be very satisfying to know how much joy and comfort you help bring to your customers in a difficult time of their lives."

Peternity products are shipped via UPS, USPS and FedEx, depending on the artist creating your product. Turnaround time is 2-3 weeks for personalized, engraved and embroidered items, while all other items should be received in 1-2 weeks.

The Peternity.com shopping cart is set up to ship to the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii and Canada. For international shipping, Peternity can quote shipping for specific countries. When shipping to Canada Peternity offers two UPS options: affordable standard shipping which takes three business days, or UPS Worldwide Express which will deliver in one to three business days by 12:00 noon.
