1&1 Internet US Data Center Goes Green

In cooperation with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), 1&1 is now proud to support renewable energy for its U.S. Data Center.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 1, 2008 -- 1&1 Internet Inc, the world's largest web host by known servers, today announced the US data center is going green. 1&1 Internet is purchasing enough Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from the non-profit, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, to match 100% of the electricity used at the company's data center. The majority of the RECs will be sourced from the Bowersock Mills and Power Company's hydroelectric facility in Lawrence, Kansas. This hydroelectric facility is certified low impact by the Low Impact Hydro Institute (LIHI). 1&1's renewable energy purchase for the Lenexa, Kansas-based facility is enough clean energy to power at least 300 U.S. homes for one year. With renewable resources 1&1 will save emissions of 30,000 tons of CO2 per year.

1&1 Internet accepts the responsibility to become a green-powered company
"1&1 Internet accepts the responsibility to become a green-powered company," said Oliver Mauss, CEO of 1&1 Internet Inc. "We are proud to now be the first big hosting company with all our data centers' energy usage offset by renewable, clean energy. We believe this is an important step for every organization to take, and a contribution helping to save our planet."

BEF uses revenues generated from the sale of RECs to directly support new renewable energy projects and watershed ecosystem restoration. All of the RECs' 1&1 will purchase from BEF will be certified under the Green-e® Energy program, the nation's leading voluntary certification program for renewable energy. For over a decade, the Green-e® program, administered by the Center for Resource Solutions, has been certifying renewable energy that meets environmental and consumer protection standards that it developed in conjunction with leading environmental, energy and policy organizations.

Mauss added, "1&1 is proud that our worldwide customers are now part of our 1&1 green coalition, with all hosted websites contributing to offsetting carbon emissions through the support of renewable energy."
