Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) today announced the addition of two key executives and WiFi pioneers to its wireless broadband product division, Optimum® WiFi. Tim Farrell has been named Vice President, Wireless Product Development and Craig Plunkett has been named Vice President, Wireless Market Development.
Both joined Cablevision within the last month, and report to Kevin Curran, Senior Vice President, WiFi Product Development. Cablevision recently announced completion of the initial phase of its Optimum WiFi deployment, which offers fast wireless Internet service in the commercial and high-traffic areas of the company's New York metropolitan service area as a free value-added enhancement for Optimum Online high-speed Internet customers.

In his role as Vice President, Wireless Product Development, Mr. Farrell is responsible for product evolution and partnerships. Prior to joining Cablevision, he served as Vice President of Product, Professional Services & Engineering for Boingo Wireless, a global WiFi aggregator that enables consumers to access WiFi at more than 100,000 hotspots worldwide with a single account. There, his responsibilities included Product Management, Software and Server Engineering, Reporting, and Professional Service Sales. Mr. Farrell is an accomplished technology executive with successful domestic and international experience in product lifecycle management, technology development, and operations. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California.
As the company's Vice President, Wireless Market Development, Mr. Plunkett is responsible for customer experience management and product implementation. Prior to that, he co-founded Fire Island Wireless (FIW), a Wireless ISP serving the western communities of Fire Island. Created in 2004, FIW has pioneered the technology and business models to deliver fixed broadband and WiFi hotspot access to the barrier islands of Long Island. Mr. Plunkett is also the co-founder of Wi-RAN, a transportation WiFi provider, delivering Internet access and vehicle location services to buses. Additionally, Mr. Plunkett acquired and managed Urban Hotspots, a Wi-Fi provider of café and public space Internet access. Mr. Plunkett holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Fordham University.
Already the largest and most advanced consumer WiFi network in the nation, based on geographic coverage, Optimum WiFi has been deployed across the high-traffic community zones throughout Nassau County, in areas of Suffolk County, and on commuter rail platforms, and station parking lots across Long Island. Over the next two years, Cablevision will deploy Optimum WiFi across its entire service area.
Optimum WiFi offers free and unlimited wireless Internet access as a value-added benefit for Cablevision's 2.4 million Optimum Online high-speed Internet customers. Current Optimum Online customers, using laptop computers and portable WiFi-enabled devices like the iPhone and iPod Touch, can access Optimum WiFi through a simple sign-on screen. Once a customer logs into the service by entering their Optimum User ID and password, the network delivers fast symmetrical speeds of up to 1.5 megabits-per-second.
Cablevision currently provides Optimum Online high-speed Internet service to more than 2.4 million customers, more than 51 percent of the homes passed by Cablevision's fiber optic network, the highest penetration of any Internet service in the nation.
