Tamil American group announces support of Obama. They expect Obama will be supportive of their concerns, especially of the continuing genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Tamils for Obama, a political action committee of American Tamils, announces its support in the current election for Democratic candidate Senator Barack Obama.

Tamils are an ethnic group living mainly in the northeast of Sri Lanka and southern India. They are a minority population in Sri Lanka currently engaged in a civil war they regard as genocide. Tamils for Obama is comprised of Tamils who have settled in the U.S., or who were born here.

These Tamils urge the 44th president, whom they expect to be Mr. Obama, to take a strong hand in resolving the Sri Lankan civil war. They suggest any one of a number special envoys President Obama might put in charge, including Bill Clinton, George Mitchell, James Baker, Jim Leach, or Colin Powell.

In their statement, Tamils for Obama suggest that "The solution to the Sri Lankan problem could be based on the Bosnian model or on one of the many others like Montenegro, East Timor, Quebec, Slovakia, or Kosovo. "We might be able to utilize Ambassador Richard Holbrooke's expertise," a spokesman suggests," to bring peace to Sri Lanka."

These Tamils cite a number of prominent Democrats who have spoken in favor of their cause in Sri Lanka, including Senator Patrick Leahy, Congressman Frank Pallone, Congressman Rush Holt, Senate Foreign Aid Subcommittee aide Tim Rieser, along with international diplomats.
