The American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section has honored Kenneth M. Suggs with its Pursuit of Justice Award. The award recognizes lawyers and judges who have shown outstanding merit and excelled at ensuring access to justice.
The award was presented to Suggs Oct. 4 at the T.I.P.S. annual meeting in Hilton Head, S.C.
Suggs also was recently selected again for inclusion in "Best Lawyers in America," which annually recognizes attorneys who excel in their practice areas.
Suggs, of Columbia, SC, is a partner at Janet, Jenner, Suggs, LLC, Baltimore, MD. He has been a trial lawyer for more than 30 years, and served in 2006 as president of the American Association for Justice. He has represented plaintiffs in medical malpractice, pharmaceutical negligence, mass torts and other wrongful death and personal injury cases.
He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1975, and a bachelor of arts in economics from Clemson University in 1968. Before attending law school, he served in the United States Navy, including two years in the Vietnam War.
Suggs has held a broad range of leadership positions in many organizations devoted to law and education. He is the 2006 recipient of the "Advocate of the Year" award presented by the South Carolina Appleseed Legal Justice Center. He also attained recognition as a Fellow of the National College of Advocacy. He served as President of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association in 1981, and currently serves on its Board of Governors and Legislative Committee. Suggs was also awarded the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Public Citizen Award in 2002.
Suggs served as president of the Richland County Bar Association in 1999 and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has also served as a member of the US District Court Advisory Committee and was a co-draftsman of the South Carolina Rules of Evidence, later adopted by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
From 1968 to 1972, Mr. Suggs served as a petty officer in the U.S. Navy. From 1970 to 1972, he was assigned to the intelligence branch of the Commander, Seventh Fleet, operating in the Vietnam theater. During that time, he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and an award from the government of South Vietnam, the Vietnamese Honor Medal.
